About ArborLynx

What is ArborLynx?

ArborLynx is new genealogy research software currently under development by a French-Canadian genealogist, with the needs of fellow French-Canadian genealogists in mind.

ArborLynx brings family trees, historical records, sources, parishes, places, and research tools together in one integrated application, helping genealogists explore not only who their ancestors were, but also the communities and connections that shaped their lives.

What makes ArborLynx different from other genealogy programs?

Where other genealogy programs focus on the family tree, ArborLynx looks at the entire family forest. This broader perspective treats genealogy as an interconnected research process.

Our ancestors were more than names and dates. They belonged to parishes and communities. They had neighbors, friends, godparents, priests, notaries, witnesses, and employers. They appeared in census records and participated in events that connected their lives to countless others.

ArborLynx is designed to bring these people, relationships, places, historical records, and supporting evidence together, allowing genealogists to explore their ancestors’ lives beyond the traditional family tree.

Is ArborLynx only for Québec genealogy?

Not at all! While ArborLynx was conceived with Québec and French-Canadian genealogy in mind, it is designed to accommodate genealogical research from anywhere in the world.

Its specialized features reflect the particular needs of Québec researchers, including parish records, historical geography, census research, and the extensive genealogical resources available for the region.

Whether your ancestors lived in Québec, Acadia, France, the United States, or elsewhere, ArborLynx provides a research environment for exploring and documenting their lives and family connections.

Why was ArborLynx created?

ArborLynx grew out of a French-Canadian genealogist’s desire for software that better reflected the way he researched his own family history.

Genealogical research often involves moving between family trees, parish registers, census records, historical maps, books, photographs, and online databases. Each resource provides part of the story, but keeping everything organized and connected can be challenging.

ArborLynx was created to bring these elements together in one research environment, helping genealogists spend less time managing information and more time discovering their ancestors’ stories.

Is ArborLynx suitable for beginners?

Absolutely. ArborLynx is being designed for genealogists of all experience levels, from beginners discovering their family history to experienced researchers working with extensive family trees and complex historical records.

The goal is to make everyday tasks intuitive while providing more advanced research tools as your experience and research needs grow.

Whether you’re entering your first ancestor or investigating a family with thousands of relatives, ArborLynx aims to provide the tools you need without requiring you to become a computer expert.

Your research and GEDCOM

Can I import my existing family tree?

Yes. ArborLynx supports GEDCOM import, allowing you to bring your existing genealogical research from other genealogy programs into a new ArborLynx Forest file.

If you already have a Forest file, you can also import additional GEDCOM files into it. ArborLynx includes a sophisticated identity-resolution system designed to identify people who may already exist in your research, helping you avoid unnecessary duplicates.

Importing genealogical information accurately is a major development priority. ArborLynx is undergoing extensive testing to preserve relationships, events, sources, notes, and other important information during the import process.

What happens if my GEDCOM contains people who are already in ArborLynx?

ArborLynx includes a sophisticated identity-resolution system designed to recognize people who may already exist in your Forest.

During import, it compares information such as names, dates, family relationships, and identifying references to determine whether an incoming person may match someone already in your research.

Clear matches can be identified automatically, while uncertain cases are presented for your review. This helps prevent duplicate people without risking the accidental combination of two different individuals.

You remain in control of how new information is incorporated into your Forest.

Can I export my genealogy to another program?

Yes. ArborLynx will feature full GEDCOM export capabilities, allowing you to transfer your genealogical research to other compatible genealogy programs.

Using ArborLynx

Will ArborLynx be available in French and English?

Yes. ArborLynx is being developed as a fully bilingual application, with English and French interfaces.

Particular attention is being given to Québec French, ensuring that the terminology reflects the language and research practices of French-Canadian genealogists rather than relying on literal translations.

Users will be able to switch between English and French according to their preference.

Will ArborLynx run on my computer?

ArborLynx is being developed for Microsoft Windows.

A native version for macOS will follow the initial Windows release. Detailed system requirements, including supported Windows versions and recommended hardware, will be published closer to launch.

Do I need an Internet connection to use ArborLynx?

No. ArborLynx is designed as a desktop application that stores your genealogical research locally on your computer. You can access your Forest and continue working on your family history without an Internet connection.

Internet access is required for certain features, such as online maps, external genealogy websites, and other web-based services.

Where is my genealogical information stored?

Your genealogical research is stored locally on your computer, giving you control over your family history.

ArborLynx does not require you to upload your family tree to an online service, and your research is not automatically published or shared with others.

Your Forest remains private unless you choose to export or share information from it.

Can I back up my genealogy?

Yes. ArborLynx is being designed with backup and restore capabilities to help protect your valuable genealogical research.

You’ll be able to create backups of your Forest and store them in a location of your choosing, including an external drive or a cloud-synchronized folder such as OneDrive or Google Drive.

If you need to recover your research, ArborLynx’s restore functionality is intended to help you recover your Forest from a backup.
